Paul Williams scored 18 points and Chris Johnson hit the go-ahead 3-point basket to lead Dayton to an 80-76 victory Thursday over Wake Forest in the first round of the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Matt Kavanaugh had his first career double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Flyers (3-1) advanced to Friday’s semifinals, where they will play the winner of Thursday night’s contest between Arizona State and Fairfield.

Travis McKie scored 20 points for the Demon Deacons (3-1).

Dayton trailed 75-71 with 93 seconds left before Williams hit his fifth 3-pointer of the second half. Johnson followed with the go-ahead 3-pointer with 35.4 seconds remaining to give the Flyers a two-point lead.

Johnson added two free throws with 3.5 seconds left for the final margin.

Kevin Dillard also scored 15 points for Dayton, which overcame 18 turnovers.

C.J. Harris tallied 18 points and Tony Chennault scored 17 for Wake Forest.

Williams missed all six of his first-half shots but scored eight points in opening the second half with an 11-4 run as Dayton took a seven-point lead. The Demon Deacons recovered to score nine straight points and took a 46-44 lead on a 3-pointer by Chase Fischer.

Fischer hit three more 3-pointers during an 11-5 run that saw Wake Forest take a 61-55 lead. Dayton rallied to tie the score at 64 on a three-point play by Kavanaugh with 5:11 to play.

Wake Forest meets the loser of Thursday’s Arizona State-Fairfield game on Friday.
