Arizona State 71, Hartford 63: Freshman guard Jahii Carson scored 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting to help the Sun Devils use a big second half to hold off the visiting Hawks.

Freshman Eric Jacobsen chipped in a career-high 16 points, with all but three coming in the second half, and also grabbed six rebounds. Senior swingman Carrick Felix earned a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and junior guard Evan Gordon scored 12 points for Arizona State (7-1).

Only five players scored for Hartford (4-4), which received a 26-point performance by sophomore forward Nate Sikma. Sophomore guard Yolonzo Moore II had 11 points and eight rebounds. Jamie Schneck and Wes Cole each finished with 10.

Arizona State grabbed the lead for good with 6:56 to play in the first half on a jumper by center Jordan Bachynski. The Sun Devils led by one at halftime and didn't pull away until around six minutes remained.

Hartford got to the free-throw line just seven times, making all of its attempts. Arizona State shot 23 free throws, connecting on just 11.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona State shot 56.3 percent from the field, the best percentage an opponent has shot against Hartford this season. ... The Sun Devils' 7-1 start is their best since the 2008-09 season. … This was the first meeting between the schools.
