JJ O’Brien had 12 points and 10 rebounds as the host Aztecs tightened up the Mountain West race by dispatching of the Lobos.

Jamaal Franklin added 10 points despite a woeful 4-for-16 shooting performance and San Diego State (16-4, 4-2) had a 37-23 rebounding advantage while moving within a half-game of first-place New Mexico.

Kendall Williams scored 14 points for the Lobos (17-3, 4-1), who shot 25 percent and committed 17 turnovers while recording a season low for points. New Mexico’s previous low was 46 against Saint Louis on Dec. 31.

The Aztecs led from the outset and had a 15-6 edge before the midway point of the first half. New Mexico trailed 25-19 after a basket by Cleveland Thomas with 4:54 to go in the half but San Diego State scored the final eight points for a 33-19 lead at the break.

San Diego State’s lead reached 43-24 on O’Brien’s putback with 14:09 remaining. A layup by Chase Tapley boosted the advantage to 21 with 2:09 remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Aztecs accumulated 10 steals, led by Skylar Spencer’s three. … The Lobos were 11-of-44 from the field and 3-of-15 from 3-point range. … Tapley became the eighth player in school history to start 100 games. He scored eight points.
