No. 23 Indiana 89, No. 8 Maryland 70: Yogi Ferrell made seven of his team’s season-high 15 from 3-point range and scored 24 points as the Hoosiers rolled over the visiting Terrapins for their fourth straight victory.
James Blackmon Jr. poured in 22 points, including three 3-pointers, as Indiana (15-4, 5-1 Big Ten) tied Wisconsin for first place in the league. Troy Williams chipped in with 16 points and seven rebounds while Collin Hartman scored a career-high 15 as the Hoosiers shot 60 percent from the field and made 15-of-22 from behind the arc.
Jake Layman led the way with 13 points and Jared Nickens contributed 12 for Maryland (17-3, 5-2), which gave up a season high in points and shot 50.9 percent from the field. Melo Trimble had 10 points and Dez Wells added nine on 3-of-10 shooting as the Terrapins saw a three-game win streak come to an end.
Hartman scored seven early as Indiana led by as much as nine, but Layman made 5-of-7 from the field for 11 points as Maryland pulled within 38-35 at intermission. The Hoosiers scored 14 of the first 19 points in the second half – five by Ferrell – to push their lead to 52-40.
The Terrapins cut the deficit to eight before Ferrell and Robert Johnson drilled 3-pointers during an 8-2 burst, increasing Indiana’s advantage to 14 with a little over eight minutes to go. Blackmon’s 3-pointer with under five minutes left gave the Hoosiers an 80-61 lead and they cruised from there.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ferrell matched a career high for 3-pointers and missed only one of his attempts, and he also dished out five assists and did not commit a turnover. … The Hoosiers are 61-8 at their home court -- Assembly Hall -- since the 2011-12 campaign and stand 12-1 this season. … Indiana leads the all-time series 6-2, but Maryland beat the Hoosiers 64-52 in the NCAA Tournament Championship Game in 2002.
