NO. 16 MICHIGAN 72, ILLINOIS 61: Trey Burke scored 21 points and jumped into the Michigan record books as the Wolverines snapped a 13-game losing streak in Assembly Hall.

Michigan (22-8, 12-5 Big Ten) followed a loss with a victory for the eighth time this season and kept its hopes alive for a Big Ten regular season title.

Illinois (17-13, 6-11 Big Ten) suffered its third straight loss to the Wolverines and fell to 2-9 in its last 11 games.

Burke set the freshman season assist record for Michigan, dishing out five to climb to 143 assists.

Backcourt mate Tim Hardaway Jr. took control midway through the second half, scoring 11 straight points to extend the Wolverines’ lead to double figures. He finished with 25, including 4-for-4 shooting from 3-point range despite his recent shooting struggles.

Center Meyers Leonard kept Illinois competitive, scoring 13 of his 18 points in the final 20 minutes and giving an undersized Michigan frontcourt fits in the paint. He pulled down nine rebounds.

Brandon Paul scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half for the Illini and did not hit a single field goal in the second half.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Illinois went on a 17-5 run over a seven minute stretch that spanned the half to pull within one point … Michigan picked up its first win in Champaign since 1995 … Michigan has rebounded from all eight of its losses, winning those games by an average of 10.8 points … Burke scored 14 of his 21 points in the first half.
