No. 20 Butler 70, Pennsylvania 57: Roosevelt Jones recorded a career-high 24 points as the Bulldogs held off a challenge from the visiting Quakers to earn their eighth straight victory.

Penn trimmed a 10-point deficit to 52-49 with 8:42 remaining before Butler (11-2) scored the next 10 points – six by Jones – to regain control. Khyle Marshall added 14 points and Kellen Dunham 10 for the Bulldogs, who survived a rough shooting night from leading scorer Rotnei Clarke.

Miles Cartwright led the way with 15 points for Penn (2-10) and Tony Hicks added 10. The Quakers were without leading scorer and rebounder Fran Dougherty, who has missed the last two games with mononucleosis.

Clarke was 2-of-11 from the field, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range, to score six points – 12 below his average. Clarke entered the game tied for first in the nation from beyond the arc, draining an average of 4.17 per game from long range.

Penn remained close in the first half by making five of its seven attempts from 3-point range, while Butler was 2-of-13 from behind the arc. Still, Jones scored 15 points in the opening 20 minutes to help Butler manage a 35-29 lead at intermission.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Butler has won the first game of January eight straight years. … Penn, which had not played in the state of Indiana since 1987-88, was 8-of-15 from 3-point range and the Bulldogs were 4-of-19. … Butler, which dominated on the boards 35-19, is 6-0 at home this season and 171-25 since the start of 1999-2000 at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.
