No. 22 Pittsburgh 63, St. John’s 47: Tray Woodall scored a season-high 25 points as the visiting Panthers used a second-half run to pull away from the Red Storm.

Woodall shot 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-7 from 3-point range for Pittsburgh (21-7, 9-6 Big East), which snapped a two-game losing streak. Lamar Patterson had 11 points and a team-high six rebounds and Steven Adams added eight points while the Panthers held St. John’s to 31.6 percent from the field and 2-of-15 from beyond the arc.

Freshman JaKarr Sampson led the Red Storm (16-11, 8-7) with 14 points and Phil Greene had 11.

Woodall made two 3-pointers as Pittsburgh ran out to a 17-10 lead 8:50 into the contest. Greene scored nine of his points to help pull St. John’s within 24-21 with 4:59 left in the first half before the Panthers settled for a 30-27 lead at halftime.

After two Sir’Dominic Pointer free throws gave the Red Storm a 33-32 edge with 17:25 to go, Pittsburgh reeled off a 23-8 run — keyed by two 3-pointers and a three-point play from Woodall — to build a 55-41 cushion with 5:32 to go. St. John’s never got closer than 10 from there.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Pittsburgh has now won nine of the last 11 meetings in the series. … The Panthers entered the game ranking first in the Big East in scoring defense (55.2). … Pointer finished with six points and a game-high eight rebounds. ... The two teams entered the game tied with Villanova for seventh place in the Big East standings.
