No. 5 Kansas 91, West Virginia 65: Ben McLemore broke Danny Manning’s 28-year-old school record for most points in a game by a freshman, tallying 36 to lead the host Jayhawks over the Mountaineers in Big 12 play.

Jeff Withey had 14 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots and Elijah Johnson added 12 points and 10 assists for Kansas (25-4, 13-3 Big 12), which has won six consecutive contests to move a half-game ahead of Kansas State for the Big 12 lead. The Wildcats play Baylor later Saturday.

Terry Henderson scored 20 points and matched his career best with six 3-pointers for West Virginia (13-16, 6-10). Dominique Rutledge recorded season highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Mountaineers, who lost their fourth straight game.

McLemore had 19 first-half points to help Kansas build a 45-31 halftime lead. West Virginia trailed by 10 with 16 minutes to play before the Jayhawks put the game away with a 21-2 run, taking a 72-43 lead on Travis Releford’s dunk with 10:33 left.

The Mountaineers started strong and led 16-9 after a three-point play by Deniz Kilicli with 12:41 remaining in the first half. Kansas rebounded to take a 21-20 lead on Withey’s layup with 8:34 left in the half and finished the period with a 10-2 spurt to take a 14-point halftime lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Manning scored his 35 points against Oklahoma State exactly 28 years ago to the day. … Kansas shot 56.7 percent from the field and went 11-of-18 from 3-point range. The Mountaineers shot 32.8 percent from the field. … Withey has blocked seven or more shots 11 times in his career.
