Illinois 84, Chaminade 61: Joseph Bertrand scored 14 points off the bench and Brandon Paul had 13 as the Fighting Illini reached the championship game of the Maui Invitational.

Bertrand, the team’s fourth-leading scorer last season who was relegated to second string with the return of senior guards Paul and D.J. Richardson and the development of sophomore Tracy Abrams, made 5 of 7 shots, including 2-of-4 from beyond the 3-point line for Illinois (4-0).

Chaminade (2-2), coming off their upset victory against Texas in the first round, couldn’t duplicate that effort, falling behind by 16 points at the half. De’Andre Haskins led the Silverswords in scoring for a second consecutive game, netting 19 points. Bennie Murray was the only other Chaminade player in double digits with 10.

Illinois will meet Butler in the championship game Wednesday night at 10 p.m. ET. Chaminade will face No. 9 North Carolina at 7:30.

After the Silverswords outrebounded Texas in the opening round, they couldn’t match up with the Fighting Illini, who owned a 40-28 advantage on the glass.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Myke Henry had seven rebounds and Bertrand collected six to lead Illinois. … After shooting 34-for-39 from the free-throw line against Texas, Chaminade was 6-for-12 against Illinois. … Chaminade freshman guard Kevin Hu missed both his 3-point tries against the Fighting Illini after shooting 2-for-4 against Texas.
