No. 3 Virginia 61, Pittsburgh 49: Malcolm Brogdon led the way with 18 points as the Cavaliers held off the visiting Panthers for their fifth consecutive victory.

Anthony Gill contributed 12 points and six rebounds for Virginia (24-1, 12-1 ACC), which is off to its best start in school history. London Perrantes chipped in with 10 points, six assists and two steals for the Cavaliers, who finished with only seven turnovers.

Jamel Artis drained four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds for Pittsburgh (17-10, 6-7), which was 9-of-17 at the free-throw line. Sheldon Jeter added 10 points and six boards for the Panthers, who shot 38.6 percent from the field for only their second loss in the last six games.

Pittsburgh scored the first four points before seven different players had at least one basket – two from Brogdon – as Virginia ran off 18 of the next 21 points. The Panthers were held to six field goals in the first half and Brogdon’s 3-pointer pushed the lead as high as 13 before the Cavaliers settled for a 25-15 lead at intermission.

Jeter scored seven points early in the second half to cut the deficit to five and Cameron Wright’s free throw trimmed Virginia’s lead to 36-33 with 7:54 to go. The Cavaliers answered with eight straight points, capped by Marial Shayok's 3-pointer for a 44-33 lead, and Pittsburgh could not get closer than seven the rest of the way.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Virginia F Darion Atkins had a season-high four blocks to go along with nine points and six rebounds. … Pittsburgh’s 15 points in the opening 20 minutes was its lowest output in a half since Dec. 4, 2009 against New Hampshire. … Virginia’s second-leading scorer G Justin Anderson missed his third straight game with a broken finger.
