Sophomore forward Malik Pope scored 15 points and senior forward Winston Shepard recorded a triple-double in second-seeded San Diego State's 79-55 victory over seventh-seeded IPFW in a first-round NIT game Tuesday at Viejas Arena in San Diego.

Shepard had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists for San Diego State, which will play host to third-seeded Washington in the second round. Junior guard Dakarai Allen also scored 10 points for the Aztecs (26-9).

Senior forward Joe Reed scored 16 points for IPFW (24-10). Senior guard Max Landis scored 14 points. Freshman guard John Konchar had 10 points and 18 rebounds.

The teams traded leads over the first five minutes before San Diego State took control. The Aztecs mounted an 11-2 run to take a 21-11 lead, went up 34-15 on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Jeremy Hemsley and carried a 40-22 lead into the break.

The Aztecs extended their advantage to 21 points early in the second half and went ahead 48-26 on a 3-pointer by Pope. They went up 63-34 on a layup by Hemsley and by led as many as 33 in the final minutes.

The Aztecs shot 53.3 percent while holding the Mastodons to 31.1 percent shooting.
